Simplified Study: Ambition and Fate Essay Macbeth

Preparing for a Macbeth essay? Find all the important stuff here :) On looking back in my preparation leading up to my essay, I have written some simplified summary sheets of everything you need to know:

Possible essay questions under ambition and fate:

  • What role does ambition play and what are the driving forces behind it?
  • What role do external influence have on Macbeth's ambition?
  • Does Macbeth cause his own demise? If so, what traits contribute to this?

When writing an essay under this theme your argument should include some of the following:

Develop your thesis statement than state your points:
  • External influences on Macbeth's fate:
    • Lady Macbeth's influence on his decisions
    • The Witches/ supernatural prophercies
      • corruption of natural order
  • Impact of Macbeth's personality / internal morals:
    • Tyrannical actions as result of ambition
Therefore, in general a good essay paragraph set out from these points is:
  1. Paragraph about Macbeth's ambition in the beginning.
  2. Juxtapose this against the witches and Lady Macbeth's influence
  3. Demonstrate how Macbeth's actions change as a result.
  4. Relate it back to the topic
Every good essay must have evidence, so here are some starters for these points:
  • Initial description:And Fortune, on his damnèd quarrel smiling, Show'd like a rebel's whore. But all's too weak; For brave Macbeth (well he deserves that name) Disdaining Fortune, with his brandished steel, Which smoked with bloody execution, (1.2.16-20)
"False face must hide what the false heart doth know." (I, VII, 95-96). Lady Macbeth forces Macbeth to commit the crime.Yet do I fear thy nature; It is too full o' th' milk of human kindness To catch the nearest way. Thou wouldst be great, Art not without ambition, but without The illness should attend it. (1.5.15-20;28-33).
He responds with " I dare do all that may become a man;" (1.7.51)
    •  Faith in supernatural: Macbeth goes back to the witches for the 2nd time: “[his]…heart throbs to known one thing “(4.1.109-110). Include the witches prophecy as an example. A dagger of the mind, a false creation Proceeding from the heat-oppressèd brain? Thou marshal'st me the way that I was going, And such an instrument I was to use. Mine eyes are made the fools o' th' other senses, Or else worth all the rest. (2.1.44-57)
