A quick summary cheat sheet on everything you need to know about political ideologies.

political ideology is a system of beliefs and practises which determine the political decisions of a country or society.

The political compass
  • ·       Left- free economy
  • ·       Right- controlled economy.
  • ·       Up – Authoritarian
  • ·       Down- Libertarian
  • More in depth examples:
    • ·       Libertarian socialism is in the bottom left corner.
    • ·       Stalin- state more important than individual.
    • ·       State-imposed arbitrary collectivism in the extreme top left
    • ·       Extreme bottom left is voluntary collectivism at regional level, with no state involved.
Different Wings Explained:
Left wing
·       Liberty- the freedom of speech and right to dissent
·       Equality- classless society with redistribution of wealth through welfare state
·       Fraternity- the communal brotherhood, working and living as one.

Right wing
·       Authority- the preservation of order through an evolved authority
·       Hierarchy-the continuation of the existing social order
·       Property- the right to private ownership

Common ideologies explained:
Fascism
  • Centralised power with no citizen input
  • Strong focus on military
Monarchy
  • Political power lies within one family (king or queen)
Theocracy
  • beliefs and practises of religion are the foundation of government
Oligarchy
  • power held by wealthy few
Liberalism
  • Representative government with high citizen input
    • Libertarians- maximise autonomy and freedom of choice
    • Neo-liberalism- deregulated market economy (opposite of communism)
Socialism
  • left wing system where production, distribution and exchange are in common ownership in a community
Communism
  • left wing, collective ownership (state planned economy)
Anarchism
  • Society without government (opposite of fascism)
